Android Dictionary A-Z

When you're familiar with Android there will be many new terms you will encounter, actually i am neither familiar with this terms but i will try to summarize it from A-Z i will using google to help me figure it out. and if i forget to put in this article you can help me by leaving a comments so i can edit this and add it for you.

  • ADB : Android Debug Bridge, a command line that allow you to communicate with your android device
  • APK : Application Package File, format file that used to distribute or install application onto your android device, it like and .exe in windows
  • Android Market : Place where you can download and install android application, for update now it name google place
  • AOKP : Android Open Kang Project, a group of developers who modified android source and add customization for multiple device
  • AOSP : Android Open Source Project, this is android original source code released by google, which can be downloaded and modified by another developers.
  • App2SD : method that use to move or install application to micro sd, used to give space for your device memory
  •  Android : operating system that use kernel 2.6 and dalvik VM who made by Google.Inc
  • AMOLED : Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode, screen technology for used in mobile device. very colorful, brightly and very high density use in high-end mobile device

B

  • Bootloader : an internal mode in android phone that help for flashing the ROM and other activity before real operating system load.
  • Booting : a sort of process from off until it an operating system loaded
  • BLN : Back Light Notification, making your touch key into notification led, not all custom ROM support this method
  • BusyBox : several unix commands collected into one single executable file
  • Build.Prop : configuration file for hardware in android, used to be saved in /system/
  • Bootanimation : animation that show when your device booting, file stored in /system/media/bootanimation.zip
  • Bootloop : state when your device cannot do perfect booting, usually stuck on vendor logo
  • Brick : state when your device cannot turn on, totally dead
  • BSOD : Blue Screen Of Death, like on computer, your device cannot booting just only show blue scren with lot of text.

  • Cache2SD : process move/saving cache from internal device memory to micro sd 
  • Cupcake : google internal code name for Android ver 1.5
  • CWM / ClockworkMod, custom application that used for flashing custom rom, backup, restore, etc only can run in boot form, this is must have application for android medium level user 
  • CM / CyanogenMod : famous android developer who modified android source code to be add multiple functions for specific device, the latest launched source is CM10 based on Android 4.2.2 source code
  • Carrier : company that provide cell phones services
  • Capacitive : touch screen technology that take human body capacitance as input, basiclly don't need to press to input.

D

  • Donut : google internal code name for Android ver 1.6
  • Deodex : result from deodexing process, deodexing is process re compiling apk file and odex file become one file with certain way. this process must be done if you wanna modify your theme.
  • Dalvik Cache : Writable cache that contains the optimized bytecode of all apk files (apps) on your Android device. Having the information in it's own cache makes applications load faster and perform better.
  • Downloading Mode : situation when an android device ready to downloading firmware, this situation is used by odin multi downloader to flash a new firmware.
  • Dalvik : name for android virtual java machine (VM) which run android  application commands, every application run in Dalvik VM and not influence with another applications
  • DLNA : Dyanamic Living Network Alliance, method for streaming your photos and videos from smartphone to your tv

  • Eclair : google internal code name for Android ver 2.0 and 2.1
  • Ext2 / Ext3 / Ext4 : filesystem for linux kernel

  • Froyo :  google internal code name for Android ver 2.2
  • Flashing : installing your android operating system, can be upgrading or downgrading it depend the situation.
  • FC : Force Close, condition when some app got crashed
  • Fastboot : same situation like bootloader where we can install low-level component on our android
  • Firmware : software that installed on small memory chips on hardware device
  • Factory Reset : restore your cell phone into default configuration, it will erase all your data, application or even data in your micro sd

G

  • Gingerbread : google internal code name for Android ver 2.3, the most popular android operating system
  • GPU : Graphics Processing Unite, specials processor for handling 3D graphics from microprocessor.
  • GUI : Graphics User Interface, type of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices using images
  • GPS : Global Positioning System, space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites

H

  • Honeycomb : google internal code name for Android ver 3.0, ussually used for tablets 
  • Hard Reset : the act to resetting your phone to "factory", it will erase your data, applications, etc or even can erase / format your micro sd too
  • HH : Hand Held, a device that can be held by hand. ie cell phone

  • IMAP : Internet Message Access Protocol, method to retrieve email beside POP3
  • Ice Cream Sandwich / ICS : google internal code name for Android ver 4.0
  • IMEIInternational Mobile Station Equipment Identity

  • Jelly Bean : google internal code name for Android ver 4.1.2 and 4.2.2
  • JIT : Just In Time, tweaking for cpu and I/O device can work with optimal

  • Kernel : is like a bridge between operating system (OS) and hardware, kernel also store information about hardware drivers 
  • Key Lime Pie : google internal code name for Android ver 5.0, still rumors

L

  • Link2SD : another way to give more free space on device memory, not like app2sd who transfer /system/data to microsd, link2sd linking everything in /system/data to microsd 
  • Linux : An open source variant of UNIX that is used as the underlying system on android devices
  • Live Wallpapers : animated wallpaper, intorducing in android 2.1
  • Launcher : Collectively, the part of the Android user interface on home screens that lets you launch apps, make phone calls, etc. Is built in to Android, or can be purchased in the Android Market.

  • Maemo : operating system for nokia N900, one of linux distro
  • Miley : byname for milestone, one of motorola product

  • Nandroid : utility that use to make android image for backup and restore purpose
  • NAND : type flash memory that use on handheld, or we can called it ROM
  • Nandroid Backup : backup all your android include partition, user data, system data. but this backup cannot backup kernel and recovery, and only can be done on ext file system.

O

  • OTA : Over The Air, one way to update your firmware, straight download from cell phone. this update just can be done with official update
  • Odex : in android classification system, applications are available packages with the extension .apk. These application packages, or APKs contain bound .odex files whose supposed operate is to avoid wasting area.   • Recovery Mode : situation on android before it goes to android operating system, like a bios in computer 
  • ROM : Read Only Memory, a class of storage medium used in computers and other electronic devices. Data stored in ROM cannot be modified
  • RAM : Random Access Memory, a form of computer data storage. A random-access device allows stored data to be accessed directly in any random order

  • SS : Screen Shot, application to take picture from android screen, it can be used by using third party software for built in function
  • Swap : helping RAM, so it will ease RAM working there is no addition in RAM

  • Tweak : a utility on the operating system or process that can optimize the performance of the operating system.

  • Wipe Data : erase all data on android through recovery mode, this can make device restore to its original setting
  • Wipe Cache Partition : erase cache partition on microsd
  • Widget : application that place on home display, it can be straight interactive with the users
